Tape drives can stream data to and from tape very quickly. Tape media is in general better prices than other storage media and offers archival data storage. Castle Computers have worked with Tape drives for more years than we care to remember and this experience enables us to understand tape drives to the enth degree.

They offer an excellent back up solution for a small office and enable the user to use 7 back up tapes and 1 cleaning tape without having to change the media by hand. LTO Tape Drives

LTO tape drives (Linear Tape-Open) are the most cost effective solution for archival storage of data. They are renowned for their security and high performance and are very popular with small to medium businesses. They are energy efficient and are housed in a half-height form factor. Our range of LTO tape drives can hold anything from 100GB of data all the way up to 800Gb. This is often a very attractive solution thanks to the capacity and price benefits. Our full range of Quantum Tape Drives are extremely popular and are suitable for companies wishing to have confidence with the storage of data. These Tape Drives are very easy to upgrade.

SDLT Tape Drives

Super Digital Linear Tape (SDLT) is a popular tape drive technology which is used today. SDLT drives support hardware data compression. The compression factor of 2:1 is preferable for text data. 1.3:1 to 1.5:1 offers greater storage. SDLT drives offer up to 300GB of storage with the additional benefit of data compression. DLT Tape Drives

DLT (Digital Linear Tape) is a highly used for many businesses. DLT uses linear serpentine recording with multiple tracks on half inch wide tape. A single reel is contained in the cartridge. The tape is guided by 4 to 6 rollers that touch the back side of the tape. DLT7000 and DLT8000 tilt the head forward and backwards to reduce crosstalk between adjacent tracks – this is called Symmetric Phase Recording. Whilst these Tape Drives are guaranteed for many years they can easily be damaged by mishandling. Current manufacturers include Fujifilm, Hitahi/Maxell and Imation. Other companies including Quantum are resellers for these companies. There is also a performance line DLT-S and the better value line of DLT-V.
